THE RISE AND EFFECTS OF COMMUNISM IN KOREA

EFFECT OF PYONGYANG'S GOVERNANCE TO THE NATURAL RESOURCES

In 2003, there is massive air pollution on Pyongyang was largely due to combustion of coal, high use of public transportation in urban areas and due to factory use. The rivers and streams are reported to be in a severe state due to industrial effluence, humongous discharge of untreated sewage and a decrease in investment to environmental protection. The flow of the Taedong river, which flows through Pyongyang, is deteriorating due to exacerbation by constructions of the West Sea Barrage. During the Economic crisis in Korea in 1990, deforestation extremely accelerated because people turned to woodlands to provide food, shelter and firewood. In return, this has led to soil depletion, erosion and reported increased flooding. Cultivation and logging have put a lot of effect in natural disasters in North Koreafs Forest. In response to deforestation, the North Korea implemented a tree planting program. The Central Nursery under Ministry of land and Environment Protection has reported to produce 90 million saplings over the past three to 5 years all over the country.. Illegal forest destructions have been pronounced by the government as gtreacheryh and perpetrators are punished with death penalty.
